Introduction – United Nations announced that World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be celebrated on June 15 every year. The purpose of this day to raise awareness against one of the cruelest appearances of elder abuse in our society. Elder abuse may be social, sexual, physical, financial, psychological, and ill-treatment. But the problem of elder abuses cases especially by family members was not reported.
Due to the impact of Covid-19, cases of elder abuse are increased. As per a recent survey of the Agewell Foundation, there is about 73 percent of the elderly population faces abuse during the second wave of the pandemic in India. The findings of the survey showed that 82 percent of the 5,000 elderly respondents said that the present situation of Covid-19 has adversely affected their lives.
History – The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) recognized World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be observed on June 15 annually since 2006. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was declared as a day to reduce the cases of elder abuse by the United Nations in the year 2011. Due to offensive and fear, elder people would rarely speak out about ill-treatment by close family members especially youngsters or children.
Significance – Mistreatment of elder people by family members or youngsters is one of the world’s least addressed problems all over the world. This day is designated as a day when elder individuals all around the world united to speak against abuse by their family members or others. Elder abuse is a worldwide social problem that impacts the health of older people and also undermines the dignity of millions of elder individuals.
Theme – The theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is ‘’Access to Justice’’ that helps old people who are victims of abuse, violence, or neglect by their family members or society. This theme influences the capacity of elder people for enjoying fully their fundamental rights such as live with dignity in society or family, right to health, and appropriate social security.
