Introduction – International Day of Charity is observed every year on September 5 to inform stakeholders, and NGOs to help needy or poor people across the world. This international day is also observed to mark the death anniversary of Mother Teresa who died on September 5, 1997. The main purpose of this international day is to promote charity for poor people across the world by donating some amount to several NGOs that work for needy people.

Mother Teresa is also called as Saint Teresa of Calcutta and was an Albanian-Indian Catholic nun who was fully devoted to help poor or needy people and also received the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1979. She established the missionaries of charity in Kolkata in the year 1950. Mother Teresa visited India in the year 1928 and dedicated herself to help poor or needy people.

History – United Nations General Assembly proclaimed International Day of Charity is observed every year on September 5 in the year 2012. Thus, this international day is firstly celebrated on September 5, 2013.  International Day of Charity is observed worldwide to mark the death anniversary of Mother Teresa who died on September 5, 1997.

Significance – Charity may help in decreasing the effects of humanitarian crises that helping with housing, education, provide food, and child protection.  The main goal of this international day is to raise awareness about a charity activity and encourage a huge number of common people to donate to poor people across the world. This international day enhances social responsibility by increasing public support for the charity. It also provides an opportunity for common people worldwide to get involved in charity events.
