World Humanitarian Day 2025

Introduction – World Humanitarian Day is celebrated every year on August 19 to raise awareness about the importance of humanitarian and healthcare workers who work for people worldwide. The main aim of this international day is to honor the people who sacrificed their lives for humanitarian welfare in any part of the world. The United Nations General Assembly designated this day as a part of the resolution on the Coordination of Emergency Assistance of the United Nations.

 On this day, the United Nations Office decides about a theme that spread awareness all over the world. This global day also honors aid workers who worked diligently during the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide. The United Nations encouraged the people globally to come together and thanked aid workers for their impressive services to humanity.

History – World Humanitarian Day is observed to remember and honor the Special Representative of the secretary-general to Iraq, Sergio Viera de Mello with 21 aid workers that were killed during the bombing of the UN Headquarters in the city of Baghdad, Iraq on August 19, 2003. After this tragedy, the United Nations General Assembly observed August 19 as World Humanitarian Day in the year 2009.

Significance – This day honors those people who risk their lives to support several humanitarian causes and save thousands of lives in any pandemic or emergency conditions. Most people celebrate this day by honoring the humanitarians or aid workers all around the world. This day also highlighted the sacrifices by health workers that continue for providing medical help to people in need during the Covid-19 pandemic.
