Introduction – World Rabies Day is celebrated every year on September 28 across the world to spread awareness about the severity and prevention of rabies. This international day also honors the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur, a French Chemist, and microbiologist who introduced the first vaccine for rabies in the year 1885.

Rabies is an infectious viral and dangerous disease that spreads from animals to human beings or other animals, especially dogs. It causes acute inflammation of the brain and disturbs the mental faculties. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dogs are the main source of human rabies death which contributed up to 100 percent of all rabies transmissions to human beings.

History – World Rabies Day is celebrated annually on September 28 to raise awareness about rabies and its prevention worldwide. The main aim of this international day is to concentrate on the best ways to prevent and control rabies may be more effective. This day marks or commemorates the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur, a popular French Chemist, and microbiologist who developed the first-ever vaccine of rabies. Firstly, World Rabies Day is observed in the year 2007 which was held in partnership with Alliance for Rabies Control and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, USA.

Theme – The theme of World Rabies Day in the year 2022 is “One Health, Zero Deaths” which concentrates on the prevention of rabies.

Significance – This international aims to spread awareness about the prevention of rabies across the world. On this day, there are several events are organized including seminars, essay writing, discussions, quizzes, and many more which helps in increasing awareness about the severity and prevention of rabies across the world.

Rabies is a viral and deadly disease that is preventable that is caused by the saliva of infected animals especially dogs. This fatal disease is transmitted through animal bites, especially from those dogs who have not been vaccinated. The symptoms of rabies are extreme fever, mental disorder, headache, confusion, and excess salivation paralysis which finally leading to death in some cases.
