International Day of Sign Languages 2022

Introduction – International Day of Sign Languages is observed every year on September 23 to raise awareness about the importance of sign language for those people who are deaf across the world. The main aim of this international day is to help those people who have impaired hearings to be less conscious of them during expressing their thoughts in sign language worldwide.

There are around 5 percent population of the entire world needs rehabilitation for their loss or inability to hear. Most of the deaf people mainly depend or trust on sign language to talk with their family members and close friends. Sign language is one of the best ways of talking for deaf people that use visual-manual modality for conveying a message that contains the full spectrum of a language including lexicons, proper grammar, and punctuations.

History – World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) proposed to celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages on September 23 every year because WFD was established on September 23, 1951. The United Nations announced on December 19, 2017, that the International Day of Sign Languages is observed every year on September 23 across the world. Thus, firstly International Day of Sign Languages was observed in the year 2018 to raise awareness about the usage and significance of sign languages who are suffering from impaired hearing. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) is a federation of 135 national associations of deaf people which represents about 70 million deaf people across the world. They proposed to celebrate this day to spread awareness about the use of sign languages for deaf people among common people worldwide.

Theme – The theme of the International Day of Sign Languages in the year 2022 is “Sign Language Unite Us” which promotes the use of sign languages for deaf people.

Significance – Sign languages are visual languages which pass your message by using symbols or gestures. Thus, the International Day of Sign Languages was celebrated annually on September 23 to spread awareness about the usage and importance of sign languages across the world. Sign languages are important for those people who are deaf that helps in communicating with their friends, family members, and many more. According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are around 70 million deaf people that use sign language worldwide. The main aim of this international day is to inform people about the importance of the use of sign languages for those people who have impaired hearing.
