Introduction – World Asteroid Day is also known as International Asteroid Day and is celebrated every year on June 30 across the world to spread awareness about the about the impact of asteroids among common people. The main aim of this international day is to spread awareness about the impact or hazard of the asteroid among people across the world.

History – The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2016 to celebrate World Asteroid Day annually on June 30. This international day is celebrated on the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia on June 30, 1908. In past, the Tunguska event is one of the most harmful asteroid-related events in recent history on Earth. World Asteroid Day was co-founded by Grigorij Richters, B612Foudation President Danica Remy, Apollo 9 Astronaut Rusty Schweikart, Brian May, guitarist of the rock band Queen, and Stephen Hawking, a filmmaker

Theme – The theme of World Asteroid Day in the year 2022 is ‘’small is beautiful’’. This international day aims to spread awareness about the risks of the impact of an asteroid among common people across the world.

Significance – Asteroids are rocky and small objects that orbit the sun and are often described as a minor planet but when the orbiting object is large then it is also called as a planetoid. These asteroids are much smaller than planets. There are about more than 1 million asteroids which have the potential to impact Earth.  We learned about the impacts of the asteroid and is a way to understand the threat or raise awareness to the general public across the world on this day.

Tunguska event – It is also known as the Tunguska impact and is one of the events with a huge explosion in the morning which occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate, Russia on June 30, 1908. This explosion was eventually attributed to the airburst of a stony meteoroid with a size of around 330 feet.
