Introduction – World Blood Donor Day is observed every year on June 14 across the world to spread awareness about the importance of blood donation for patients and thank to blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. The main purpose of this global day is to encourage regular blood donations for ensuring that all individuals have access to inexpensive and timely supplies of safe blood in the need of emergency to patients.

History – World Health Organization announced that the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner is celebrated as a World Blood Donor Day in the year 2004. World Health Organization and its 192 member states have introduced this global day for all countries to promote blood donors for their selfless efforts in saving the lives of people during the 58^th Globe Health Assembly in May 2005. This international day was celebrated for the first time in the year 2005 by the joint initiative of the International Federation of Red Crescent Societies and Red Cross and the World Health Organization across the world.
