World Oceans Day 2022

Introduction – World Oceans Day is celebrated every year on June 8 to spread awareness about the importance of oceans in sustaining life on the earth and to inspire action to conserve it. The main aim of this global day is to conserve the water body via collective efforts and protect it from the dangers of human activities. Oceans play a significant role to support life on earth by covering 71 percent of the surface of the earth and also holding about 97 percent of water found on our planet. They are very important in the food supply of both humans and several other organisms. Due to their huge size, oceans significantly impact weather and temperature.

History – In the year 1992, World Oceans Day was first proposed to celebrate at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) and was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After that, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on December 5, 2008, and chose June 8 to observe World Oceans Day. The main goal of this global day is to highlight the importance of oceans for common people across the world.

Theme – The theme of World Oceans Day in the year 2022 is ‘’Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean’’ to celebrate this global day across the world.

Significance – Oceans are a good source of food for billions of people across the world. There are about 40 million common people will earn by being employed in ocean-based companies. Oceans also absorb about 30 percent of carbon dioxide that is produced by human activities and help in mitigating global warming. Due to uncontrolled human activities, there is about 90 percent depletion of the population of fishes that is not good for the environment and people. So, the main goal of this global day is to raise awareness about the negative impact of human activities on oceans among common people all around the world.
