International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2021

Introduction – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is celebrated annually on November 25 to spread awareness about the violence against women across the world. The main purpose of this global day is to prevent violence against women and to tell people worldwide about the basic human rights of women and gender equality.

According to the United Nations, there is estimated that 1 out of every 3 women experiences sexual violence or physical abuse from their relationship. As per a report, it also mentioned that, a rapid increase in the case of physical abuse against women during the Covid-19 pandemic. As per the latest report by the United Nations based on data from 13 countries, 2 in 3 women are suffering from physical abuse. According to the United Nations, there is about 137 women are murdered by their family members. There is only 1 out of 10 women responded and seek help from the police that is a very negligible number. So, every country should more effort to implement the law against the crimes against women that they live independently freely in any part of the world.

History – The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution 54/134 on February 7, 2000, and announced that International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed every year on November 25 worldwide. This day aims to spread awareness among people about the violence against women and improve legislation dedicated to eliminate crime against women all around the world.

In past, the United Nations introduced the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in the year 1979.  The United Nations General Assembly has also passed a resolution 48/104 by approving the ‘’Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women’’ on December 20, 1993, that lay the basis for a society with a free of crime against women and girls all around the world. Since 1981, several women’s rights activists have recognized November 25 as a day to fight sexual violence against women globally. This date was chosen to tribute the three Dominican Republic political activists, Mirabai sisters that were brutally murdered in the year 1960 due to the order of Rafael Trujillo, a former president of the Dominican Republic.

Theme – The theme of this international day in the year 2021 is ‘’Orange the World: End Violence Against Women Now’’. The orange color indicates a more hopeful future with a free of crime against women and girls in society.

Significance – The main goal of this international day is to raise awareness about the crime against women among people and improve legislation dedicated to eliminate crime against women all around the world.
