Introduction – World Diabetes Day is celebrated annually on November 14 to honor the birth anniversary of Sir Frederick Banting that invented the insulin hormone along with Charles Herbert Best in the year 1922. As per experts, there are about 463 million people all around the world that are suffering from diabetes with Type-2 diabetes. The main purpose of this global day is to spread awareness about the metabolic disorder and several tips to maintain the sugar levels in the blood that lower the risk of heart diseases. Diabetes is also main cause of several diseases such as kidney failure, blindness, and heart attack or stroke. Physical activity, healthy diet, and avoiding tobacco to lowers the risk of type-2 diabetes.

History –Both International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) and World Health Organization were introduced World Diabetes Day in the year 1991. This international day was officially recognized by the United Nations in the year 2007 by adopting the resolution.
Theme – The theme of World Diabetes Day 2021 -23 is ‘’Access to Diabetes Care” which promotes people to be aware of diabetes that may also increase the risk of heart attacks.
Significance – Diabetes is a common disease all over the world that people face difficulties in daily life. So, the main goal of this day is to spread awareness about diabetes and also recognize those people who fight this disease. The reason to celebrate World Diabetes Day is to encourage the learning associated with diabetes and its preventions or treatments. This day also focuses on drawing attention to maintain sugar levels in the blood to prevent diabetes. Diabetes is also harmful to your heart health that may responsible for heart diseases.

Diabetes is a long-lasting disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin that may cause an enhanced concentration of glucose level in the blood. There are some types of diabetes are discussed below –
- Type 1 diabetes – This type of diabetes occurs in people due to a lack of insulin production in the body.
- Type 2 diabetes – This type of diabetes is caused due to the body’s ineffective use of insulin. It is also caused by obesity, increase in age, drinking, physical inactivity, and bad diet.
- Gestational diabetes – This type of diabetes occurs during the time of pregnancy. But most of the cases of gestational diabetes are prevented after a baby is born.
