As per the Malayalam calendar, it states that in this year, Onam is celebrated on 22nd Nakshatra Thiruvonam in the month of Chingam. It started on August 12 and will continue till August 23. Onam is the most important festival of Kerala and is celebrated with great ceremony.
This festival is celebrated for 10 days in honor of generous King Mahabali that led his state to the path of wealth. It is believed that the spirits of the generous King visit his subject and bless them with prosperity during the duration of 10 days and it also marks the Malayalam New Year.
On this day, men and women wear traditional attires and celebration of flower decoration (Pookkalam), mask dance (Kummattikali), tiger dances (Pulikali), women’s dance (Thumbi Thullal), dance (Attachamayam), martial arts (Onathallu), and folk songs.
