Introduction – International Olympic Day 2021 will be observed on June 23 every year to promote the idea of the Olympics. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) organized the Olympic Day on June 23 annually for celebrating the foundation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that was established on June 23, 1894, in Sorbonne, Paris. The purpose of this day is to encourage sports and spreads the message of making sports an essential part of life.
History – A member of the IOC in Czechoslovakia, Dr. Joseph Gruss, reported about World Olympic Day in the year 1947 in Stockholm. The idea of World Olympic Day was adopted in the 42nd session in St Moritz in January 1948 and June 23 was selected for commemorating the foundation of the IOC. Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Canada, Portugal, Uruguay, and Belgium organized the event in their own countries for encouraging the idea of sports in young people. The first International Olympic Day was observed on June 23, 1948.
Theme – The theme of World Olympic Day 2021 is ‘’Stay healthy, stay strong, stay active with the #Olympic Day workout on June 23’’.
Significance – World Olympic Day is celebrated for promoting more people and participating in the Olympic games. This event aims to spread and encourage the Olympic Movement is dependent on three pillars – ‘’move’’, ‘’learn’’, and ‘’discover’’. The National Olympic Committees are organizing sports, educational, and cultural activities for promoting participation among young sportspeople regardless of gender, social background, and sports ability.
