Volkswagen Corrado

German company, Volkswagen advertized his new product Volkswagen Corrado and is manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück. The Volkswagen Corrado comes with a three door, front engine, four passengers (2+2), front engine, and front wheel drive lift back coupe. It is designed by Herbert Schäfer.

Overview – The floor pan of Volkswagen Corrado is based on the A2 platform with the expectation of VR6 models. All the versions of this vehicle use the suspension, sub frames, steering and braking components from the Volkswagen A2 platform model range.

The VW Corrado Took Active Rear Spoilers Mainstream in the '80s

In this vehicle, the VR6 uses the suspension components from the A3 model range including the rear axle assembly and some parts of the A3’s ‘plus’ type front axle assembly.  In the Volkswagen Corrado, the subsequent wider front wheel track of the Corrado VR6 necessitated the fitting of new front wings with wider wheel arches and liners along with a new front bumper assembly.

The main feature of Volkswagen Corrado is its flush mounted windows and active rear spoiler which increases automatically when the speed of car exceeds 60mph automatically retract at speed below 15mph which can be manually controlled by the driver.

Variants – At the end of 1988, Volkswagen has launched Corrado which comes with a front wheel drive and featured petrol engines. The vehicle also offers  two engine choices: a 1.8 litre 16-valve inline four with 136 PS (100 kW; 134 hp)  and a supercharged 1.8 litre eight valve inline four which is promoted as the G60 and delivering 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp).

The Volkswagen Corrado VR6 Is A Rare German Gem

The name of the Corrado G60 is for the G Lader with which it is equipped, a scroll supercharger whose interior resembles the letter “G”. There is another reason for the name of G60 is that the G60 Jet was an economy version for the German market only, thought to be a run out model before the introduction of the VR6. This type of model was available in four colors with a feature of color coded interior. Presently the company could not confirm production numbers for the Jet model.

There is another variant of Volkswagen Corrado is Volkswagen Motorsport (VWMS) Corrado 16V G60. In this variant of vehicle, the 16 valve engine that combined with the original G-Lader was appreciated within the enthusiast community; the model never saw series production. Generally it is believed that only two factory built examples were manufactured, both in Nugget Yellow.

In 1992Volkswagen has launched two new engines in which first engine was a naturally aspirated 2.0 litre, 16 valve 136 PS (100 kW; 134 hp) inline four which is basically a further development of the 1.8 litre engine.  But this engine was not made available in the North American market. There is another second engine was the twelve valve VR6 engine which is available in two variants such as  a 2.8 litre 179 bhp (133 kW; 181 PS) model available in the United States and Canadian markets, and a 2,861 cc (2.9 L; 174.6 cu in) producing 190 PS (187 bhp; 140 kW) at 5,800 rpm and 245 N⋅m (181 lbf⋅ft) at 4,200 rpm of torque version available in the European market, fuel feed by Bosch Motronic 2.7 fuel injection.

The model VR6 was advertized as the Corrado SCL or sport luxury coupe in the United States.

The G60 engine was disappeared from the market of North America after 1992 and the European market in 1993 when the launch of VR6 engine. This is because theVR6 engine offered a compromise between V shaped and straight engines by insertion the two cylinder banks at an angle of 15°, with a single cylinder head.

The Volkswagen was also available in Japan at Yanase dealerships which specialize in North American and European vehicles that providing the 1.8 L engine with either the automatic or manual transmission.
