Indian Railways will be teaming with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for increase in safety and decrease in accidents. This deal also helps in improving efficiency.
According to senior Railway Ministry official work in the Geographical Information System(GIS) Project,”We will undertake a massive exercise of GIS mapping of the entire rail route and assets including buildings, land, workshops and other facilities in the network using geospatial technology.”
Geospatial technology includes Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS).
This technology will be available to Indian Railways from satellite –aided navigational support through the GPS assisted geo augmented navigation (GAGAN) system of OSRO.
“We will sign a MoU with ISRO shortly to avail the online satellite images to create a GIS platform,” as per official.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will enable receiving images and communications from the satellite system. The images will support in mapping the area, communications will allow the Wi-Fi facility in the trains
At the time of accidents the technology will help in finding the exact location of trains so the rescue operation starts quickly and the increase the possibility in save the lives of thepassengers. The technology also supports in railways in developing solutions for protection at unmanned crossings with the help of remote sensing facility. It decreases the accident in unmanned crossings and increases the chance the protection of life from accidents.
Remote sensing will be used by activating the hooters to inform the drivers of transporters before the arrival of train at the unmanned railway crossings. The satellite images can be used for geo-fencing of the stations for make a ticket without paper. The Indian Railways have begins the paperless tickets facility in unreserved section for suburban facility in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. The railways also plan to use the technology in monthly period tickets and platform tickets.
Geo-fencing is a technology in which a virtual barrier uses the GPS facility or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to describe geographical areas.
The technology can also be used for tracking the train to expandinformation of the movement of the trains. It helps in collect the information about the correct timings of train. Presently the movements of the trains tracked manually.
