Ocean – A very deep and large sea which has saline water is called an ocean. The oceans cover at around 71 percent of the earth’s surface. In fact, the oceans constitute about 97 percent of the world’s water resources. The remaining 3 percent of the world’s water is in the form of ice in the polar regions of the earth. The average depth of the oceans is about 3.9 kilometers. All the oceans are interconnected by water and characterized by saline water (salty water).

There are five oceans on the earth

1. Pacific Ocean
2. Atlantic Ocean
3. Indian Ocean
4. Arctic Ocean
5. Antarctic Ocean

The Pacific Ocean is the biggest and deepest ocean, which covers more than 30 percent of the surface of the planet. Actually, the Pacific Ocean is so big that it can accommodate all the seven continents of the earth. The maximum depth of Pacific ocean is about 4.2 kilometers and covers about 63.8 million square miles.

As per scuentists, carbon dioxide from the sea water can be extracted to make hydrocarbons. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the sea water is 140 times is greater than that of air. The scientists in the United States have demonstrated that the capability of recovering carbon dioxide and hydrogen from sea water and turned or converted imto liquid hydrocarbon fuel source from ocean. Now, scientists are going to study or research that how the conversion of ocean water into hydrocarbon fuel can be made economically. So, it has surely become possible to convert ocean water into fuel. If it is done, it will be very useful and lower the dependence on fossil fuels.

Scientists have also used sunlight to turn sea water into hydrogen peroxide, which can be used in fuel cells to generate electricity.
