Heeng is also called Asafoetida and is mainly cultivated in Iran and Afghanistan. In India, it is grown in Kashmir and some parts of Punjab
It is a latex gum extracted from several species of a perennial herb called ferula. It consists of resins, gum, volatile oil and ash It is commonly used in Indian cuisine and its strong flavor sometime does not favor many. There is only minute quantity of heeng is enough for several dishes including pulses, dhokla, upmas, kadhi, and many more.
Types of Asafoetida:
Asafoetida can be categorized into two types which are white asafoetida and black asafoetida.
Health benefits of Heeng
The main health benefits of heeng are as given below-
- It is helpful in curing respiratory disorder such as asthma, common cold, and bronchitis.
- It is also used in treating several other stomach problems such as stomach gas, irritable bowel, intestinal gas, colon problems, and many more.
- It is useful in treating stimach problems and may help in digestion and treatment of abdominal injury.
- It also soothes headache and earache.
- It is also beneficial in lower blood pressure, which is also good for heart health.
- It is also helpful to promote smooth flow of blood and lowers abdominal discomfort during periods.
- It contains antioxidants and bioactive compounds, which may be beneficial in relieving joint pain and inflammation related to arthritis.
- It also help in improving digestion and reducing stomach gas, which is good for health
