Jawahar Lal Nehru – First Prime Minister of Independent India (August 15, 1947 – May 27, 1964)

Introduction – After Independence, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was the first prime minister of India from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964, for more than 16 years. Pandit Nehru established a parliamentary government in India and was also one of the founders of the Non-aligned Movement or policies in foreign affairs. Jawahar Lal Nehru was the main leader after Mahatma Gandhi to led the Indian freedom movements against the British rule between the 1930s and 1940s. After Independence, Jawahar Lal Nehru established a parliamentary democratic secular government in India. He was also the author of several books including The Discovery of India (1946), An Autobiography (1936), and many more.

Personal Details – The first prime minister of Independent India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, in the city of Prayagraj (Allahabad) in British India. Motilal Nehru (1861 -1931) is the father of Jawahar Lal Nehru who was belongs to the Kashmiri Pandit community, was a self-made barrister, and worked as the President of the Indian National Congress from 1919 to 1928. Swarup Rani Thussu is the mother of Jawahar Lal Nehru who belongs to the Kashmiri Pandit community which was settled in Lahore.

In the case of education, Pandit Nehru joined and studied in the Trinity College, Cambridge in October 1907 and graduated or passed with an honors degree in natural science in the year 1910. He also studied economics, literature, history, and politics with interest. Later, Jawahar Lal Nehru shifted to London and studied law after completing his degree in the year 1910. He also worked as an advocate of the Allahabad High Court in India after returning to India in August 1912.

Nehru had introduced or launched many big educational institutions in our country such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) for best education. Pandit Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, and children adored him and lovingly called him as ‘’Chacha Nehru’’.  Thus, the birth anniversary of Jawahar Lal Nehru was celebrated as Children’s Day across India.

Jawahar Lal Nehru is also popularly known for ‘’Chacha Nehru’’ among children. He thought or believed that the children or kids are the base of society and the future strength of our country. Previously, Jawahar Lal Nehru loved to meet kids or children with huge love or affection thus, the birth anniversary of Nehru is celebrated as a Children’s Day or Bal Diwas annually on November 14 across India.

Indian Freedom Movements – Jawahar Lal Nehru met Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1916 for the first time at the Lucknow Session of the Congress. He played an important role and worked as provincial Congress Secretary to manage several political activities in the Uttar Pradesh during the non-cooperation movement that was launched by Mahatma Gandhi. Jawahar Lal Nehru also participated in the civil disobedience movement with a satyagraha against the British salt tax. He also played a significant role in the Quit India Movement that was launched by Mahatma Gandhi on August 8, in the year 1942 during World War II to end British Rule in India.

After Independence, Jawahar Lal Nehru became the first prime minister of India between August 15, 1947 and May 27, 1964 for more than 16 years. He also implemented several policies that are based on import substitution industrialization and advocated a mixed economy in which government-controlled public sector would coexist with the private sector.

Death -Jawahar Lal Nehru died at the age of 75 at afternoon 1:44 pm on May 27 in the year 1964 due to a heart attack. After death, Nehru was cremated at the Shantivan on May 28 in the year 1964. There are about 15 million people were present at the time of the cremation of Nehru.

After the death of Pandit Nehru in the year 1964, a resolution was passed in the Parliament to celebrate his birth anniversary of Jawahar Lal Nehru as Children’s Day or Bal Diwas in India. This national day is celebrated across the country to raise awareness about the rights of a child such as the right to education for every child with appropriate care.
