Narali Purnima will be celebrated on August 19 in the year 2024 and is popularly called as ‘Shravan Purnima’ or the Coconut festival which is celebrated especially in the state of Maharashtra and Konkan region. The word ‘Narali’ comes from ‘Naral’ which means Nariyal or Coconut and ‘Purnima’ represents full moon day. Narali Purnima is celebrate with happiness, great passion and enthusiasm which has its own importance especially for Koli Community in Maharashtra.

Koli and many other fishing communities mainly celebrate narali purnima which offer nariyal (coconut) to Lord Varuna, a Sea God and seek his blessings to prevent natural calamities for fishermen in sea. Individuals offer nariyals (coconuts) also to the sea and ocean as the sign of gratitude and respect on Narali Purnima. People offering nariyal (coconut) and believed to appease or pray to Lord Varuna to make ensure safety and protection for fishermen from any natural disasters in seas and oceans.

Most people prepare several delicious dishes including narali bhaat (coconut rice), coconut burfi, coconut halwa and many more that are made up of coconut to celebrate Narali Purnima.

Narali Purnima is celebrated with many rituals and is very important festival in the state of Maharashtra and Konkan region. Thus festival is celebrated mainly by the Koli Community and many other fishermen communities on full moon day in the month of Shravan.
