Introduction – International Day of Older Persons is celebrated every year on October 1 across the world to create awareness about the importance of senior citizens in our society and to appreciate their contributions. The main purpose of this international day is to raise awareness about the issues and difficulties faced by elder persons in society. This international day provides an opportunity for celebrating and honoring for the contributions that older persons make to society.
As per the United Nations, the population of aged 60 people will be reaching up to 2 billion in the future year 2050. Presently, youngsters are harassing elder people in society, buses, trains, and many more places. The crimes against senior citizens are also rapidly increasing which is a serious problem in our society. Family members including sons and daughters are also mistreated parents and grandparents is one of the social problems across the world. In the last several years, old-age homes are increases rapidly due to the son abusing their parents and kick out of their homes. Thus, older people are living in these old age homes and it is a matter of great shame for our society.
History – The United Nations General Assembly has chosen October 1 on December 14, 1990, to observe the International Day of Old Persons across the world. Earlier, the Vienna International Plan of Action on the elderly was approved by the World Assembly in 1982 and later recognized by the United Nations General Assembly. The main aim of this international day is to spread awareness about social and medical care for elder people worldwide.
Theme – The theme of International Day of Older Persons in the year 2022 is “Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World” to celebrate this global day.
Significance – This International day aims to explore the role of legal frameworks and policies to ensure the privacy and safety of elder people in the digital world. Presently, senior citizens are mistreated by youths which is a major problem in our society. Some family members including sons and daughters are also mistreating their parents and grandparents in their homes.
The cases of depression in older people also enhances rapidly due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. In some cases, if any old person is suffering from Covid -19 then their family members kick out of their home in some places. Now, the crimes against old people are rising continuously in their homes and it’s a very serious problem for our society. Now, murders of older people are increasing in big cities which is the main problem for safety of senior citizens. The main aim of this international day is to provide medical care and safety for older people across the world.
