World Rivers Day 2022

Introduction – World Rivers Day is celebrated every fourth Sunday of September across the world. It means that this international day is celebrated on September 25 in the year 2022 to raise awareness about the importance of rivers in our life. This international day aims to highlight the importance of rivers and enhance public awareness and promotes the conservation of rivers worldwide.

History – In the past, Mark Angelo started a major clean-up event on the Thompson River in British Columbia in September 1980. Due to its success in the year 2005, it came to be called as BC River Day. In the year 2005, Mark Angelo proposed to celebrate World Rivers Day and also addresses the United Nations to spread awareness about susceptible water supplies across the world. After that, the United Nations declared that World Rivers Day will be celebrated every fourth Sunday in September worldwide. Thus, firstly this international day is observed in the year 2005 that was marked with huge success due to millions of people joined hands in helping the preservation of rivers across the world.

Theme – The theme of World Rivers Day in the year 2022 is “The importance of Rivers to Biodiversity” which highlights the importance of rivers for the existence of life on Earth.

Significance – Water plays an important role in the existence of life on Earth. It is used in bathing, washing hands, cooking, and might be used in preventing diseases. Thus, the main aim of this international day is to raise awareness about the conservation of rivers as well as water for the existence of life on Earth. This international day aims to highlight the importance of rivers and inspire common people to preserve the beautiful rivers in their countries.

This global day motivates the active involvement of common people to clean and preserve the rivers for future use. Presently, water pollution rapidly increases by throwing garbage and waste from industries and homes that are harmful for the health of people worldwide. Thus, we can conserve and clean water for the better health of people by preventing diseases that is caused by polluted or dirty water.
