Women’s Equality Day 2022

Introduction – Women’s Equality Day is observed every year in the United States on August 26 to honors American women achieving the constitutional right to vote in their country. This international day honor the decision for giving voting rights to women in the United States in the year 1920 after a long fight or struggle. The main aim of Women’s Equality Day is to raise awareness of the problems that are faced by women in society in gender-based discrimination, equal opportunities, pay disparity, gender-based violence, and abortion rights.

History – Firstly, Women’s Equality Day is celebrated in the year 1973 across the world to highlight the continuous effort of women for achieving complete equality in society. In past, firstly peaceful protests were conducted at the world’s first Women’s Rights Convention in the New York state in the year 1848. After that Bella Abzug, United States Congress Representative presented the bill for observing August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in the year 1971 to remember the continuous efforts made by women for achieving equal rights or status in society. It also marks the nationwide strike by women for celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 19th Amendment approval.

 Richard Nixon, President of the United States, announced celebrating Women’s Equality Day on August 26 every year in the year 1973. This day was also observed to commemorate the approval of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in the year 1920 which granted women the right to vote in the United States.

Theme – The theme of Women’s Equality Day in the year 2022 is ‘’Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’’. This day also highlights the continuous efforts of women in the whole year for equality and honor women with respect.

Significance – Women’s Equality Day draws attention to the problems that are faced by women and mark the acknowledgement of the 19th Amendment of the United States Constitution.  This day is observed in the United States to honor the achievements made by women in many fields. It is also celebrated for appreciating and acknowledging women and to progress to achieve gender equality across the world. There are several organizations including women’s welfare societies, NGOs, and many more arrange programs and activities for facilitating the achievements of women.
