International Youth Day 2022

Introduction – International Youth Day is celebrated every year on August 12 to highlight several problems or challenges that are faced by youths across the world. Unemployment is one of the main problems of youths all around the world. Due to Covid-19, millions of youths are unemployed which is a serious problem globally.  The main purpose of this international day is to come together to recognize and bring attention to several problems that are faced by youths worldwide.

History – In the past, young people who attended the first session of the World Youth Forum of the United Nations in Vienna, Austria in the year 1991 suggested the idea to observe International Youth Day to help raise money for the youth fund of the United Nations. The first session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth approved the resolution and announced that International Youth Day is celebrated annually on August 12 in the year 1998. Thus, firstly, International Youth Day was celebrated in the year 1999.

Theme – The theme of International Youth Day is ‘Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages’ which focuses on the harmony and cooperation between the youth and older generations is essential for achieving sustainable development goals according to Agenda 2030 of the United Nations (UN). This international day concentrates on ageism, an age-based discriminatory behavior in the year 2022

Significance – Youngsters play an important role in the development of countries with great hard work and also influence the politics of any country. Thus, most of the governments concentrate to solve the issue that is related to youngsters across the world. This international day is observed by several awareness campaigns, events, and community concerts which are beneficial in solving economic or socio-political problems that are faced by youth worldwide.

Now, Youngsters are struggling for basic facilities including health, education, and employment across the world. Youths face several problems with more challenges due to covid-19 across the world. This global provides an opportunity to discuss how to prevent future challenges including unemployment, education, and many more. This international day also highlighted the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the health, unemployment, food systems, and environment of youths globally.
