World Lung Cancer Day 2022

Introduction – World Lung Cancer Day is observed every year on August 1 to spread awareness about the threats and challenges linked with lung cancer.  The lungs are the important organs of the respiratory system in the human body that work is to inhale oxygen from the air and release carbon dioxide.  As per World Health Organization, lung cancer is one of the most common cancers that is responsible for about 25 percent of cancer death across the world. There are about 2.1 million cases of lung cancer were diagnosed in the year 2020 as per World Health Organization.

History – The Forum of International Respiratory Societies in association with the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and the American College of Chest Physicians firstly organized Word Lung Cancer Day in the year 2012. The main purpose of this international day is to inform people about the threats and main causes of lung cancer.

Lung cancer – It is a type of cancer that begins in the lungs and is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths all around the world.  Smokers have a high risk of lung cancer as compared with non-smokers. The risk of lung cancer increases in people with the number of cigarettes and length of time smoked. If you quit smoking after several years then you can lower the possibility of developing lung cancer.

Symptoms of lung cancer – There are several symptoms of lung cancer are given below –

  1. Headache
  2. Loss of appetite
  3. Difficulty in swallowing
  4. Worsening cough
  5. Problem in breathing
  6. Chest pain
  7. Cough with blood
  8. Lose weight
  9. Bone pain

Types of lung cancer – There are two common types of lung cancer are given below –

  1. Small cell lung cancer
  2. Non-small lung cancer

Risk factors – There are several factors that enhance the risk of lung cancer are given below –

  1. Regular smoking
  2. Earlier radiation therapy
  3. Family history of lung cancer
  4. Exposure to secondhand smoke

Prevention – There are some points that lower the risk of lung cancer are given below –

  • Avoid smoking
  • Do not secondhand smoke
  • Should take a diet full of vegetables and fruits
  • Daily exercise
  • Should avoid poisons at work
