Introduction – World Listening Day is celebrated every year on July 18 to celebrate the birthday of R. Murray Schafer, a Canadian composer. This global day promotes people for taking time to listen to the sounds of nature. Listening plays a significant role to understand one another

History – The World Listening Project (WLP) was established in the year 2008 that is devoted to fostering an understanding of the world and its natural environment by listening and field recording. The World Listening Project created World Listening Day in the year 2010 to honor or celebrate the birthday of R. Murray Schafer. R.Murray was a popular Canadian composer environmentalist, and author and was also known for his studies on acoustic ecology.
Theme – The theme of World Listening Day in the year 2022 is ‘’Listening Across Boundaries’’ which explores the important role of listening across several branches of knowledge such as medical, scientific, and musical purposes.
Significance –World Listening day is observed to celebrate the practice of listening because it relates to the world around us, acoustic ecology, and environmental awareness. The main purpose of this international day is to spread awareness about several issues that are related to the World Listening Project, World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, World Soundscape Project, and individual or group efforts to creatively explore photography.
