Vitamin C

Immunity plays an important role in preventing infectious diseases . Vitamin C helps in improving and maintaining immunity that also helps in preventing infectious diseases.

Vitamin C – It is essential for keeping joints, gums, teeth healthy, and increases the resistance of our body to fight infectious diseases.  In other words, Vitamin C helps in enhancing the immunity to prevent infectious diseases. Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid and also a water-soluble vitamin.  It also works as an antioxidant. As per study, Vitamin C also helps in reducing the duration of the common cold.

A large intake of Vitamin C may cause flushing of the skin, gastrointestinal discomfort, problem in sleeping, and headache.

Symptoms of Vitamin C Deficiency – Lack of Vitamin C in the food causes scurvy. Scurvy can lead to exhaustion, spontaneous bleeding, swelling, anemia, reduce the rate of healing for injuries, skin problems, and ulceration of the gums and loss of teeth. Due to the deficiency of Vitamin C, it also affects the absorption of iron and the immune system.

 There are some of the symptoms of Vitamin C Deficiency are as given below –

  • Loosening of teeth
  • Pain in the joints and muscles
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anemia
  • Poor wound healing
  • Swelling and bleeding of gums
  • Problem in breathing
  • General weakness and fatigue
  • Edema

Due to a deficiency of Vitamin C, wounds do not heal easily and reduced resistance to the common cold. Vitamin C is also known as anti-scurvy vitamin due to its action in preventing the symptoms of scurvy. It increases the resistance of the body against the common cold and other infections.

Sources of Vitamin C – There are various sources of vitamin C are as given below –

  • Oranges
  • Amla
  • Lime
  • Guava
  • Tomatoes

A large amount of Vitamin C is present in citrus fruits. Amla is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C and Guava is also another rich source of vitamin C that helps in maintaining strong immunity. Vitamin C is comparatively unstable and it is destroyed by heat. So, special care should be taken in the preparation of food to preserve Vitamin C.
