Types of Sexually Transmitted Infections or Diseases

Sexually transmitted infections or diseases – This type of disease or infection refers to a condition from one individual to another by sexual relationship. Sexually transmitted diseases can also spread through having unprotected oral, anal, and vaginal sex with any person who is suffering from any sexual disease. Sexually transmitted diseases are also known as venereal diseases or sexually transmitted infections.

It does not mean that sex is the main cause of this type of disease. It also depends on the specific sexual disease or infection that may also spread by sharing breastfeeding and needles.

Types of Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STD) – There are several types of infections or diseases through sexual contact are as given below –

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) – It is a common virus, which may affect several parts of the human body and spread from one person to another through sexual intercourse. HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections which may passed or spread through sexual contact. There are about 100 types of HPV including strains of HPV which may cause warts on feet, face, and hands. Around 30 HPV strains may affect genitals including the cervix, vulva, anus, vagina, penis, and many more, and can also cause genital warts. There are several different strains of the virus in which some are more dangerous than others. Some of the most common symptoms of HPV are warts on the throat, genitals, and mouth. Several strains of HPV infection can lead to several cancers such as

  • Penile cancer
  • Anal cancer
  • Vaginal cancer
  • Vulvar cancer
  • Cervical cancer

Most of the cases of HPV do not become cancerous in human beings. Some of the virus strains are more likely to cause cancer than others. As per the National Cancer Institute, the majority of the cases of HPV-related cancer in the United States are mainly caused by HPV 18 and HPV 16. These two strains of HPV are responsible for increasing the risk of cervical cancer cases.

There is no treatment for HPV but HPV infections may clear up on their own. A vaccine is also available for protecting against several most dangerous strains including HPV 18 and HPV 16.

Genital Herpes – The HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) is a common virus, which may affect the cervix genitals, skin, and many more parts of the human body. Generally, HSV-1 may only affect the mouth when it can spread through saliva. However, HSV-1 may spread or pass to the genital area when it can spread via oral sex. HSV-2 may also spread through anal, vaginal, and oral sex that may affect the mouth, anal, and genital area. Several initial or starting symptoms of this sexual disease are

  • Body Aches
  • Fever
  • Swollen Lymph Nodes

Several individuals have no symptoms, some individuals have only initial symptoms of this sexual disease.

Hepatitis B – It may cause a long-term sexually transmitted infection or disease that can be harmful to the liver and may spread through sexual contact. If any individual may suffer from Hepatitis B or has a virus then it may remain in their blood, semen, and many other bodily fluids. This sexual disease may also spread to a baby at the time of pregnancy or delivery. Several symptoms of Hepatitis B are

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Fever
  • Dark Urine
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Trichomoniasis – It is one of the sexually transmitted diseases and is caused by a parasite and may occur especially in females. Women may suffer symptoms of this sexual disease such as painful urination, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, and genital itching while pregnant women may have difficulty or are at higher risk of delivering kids or babies prematurely due to this sexual infection. An individual may lower the risk of this sexual infection through the use of condoms during sexual intercourse. It is important to note that male people may have no symptoms of this sexual infection. Several symptoms of Trichomoniasis in women are

  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Genital Itching, redness, and burning
  • Painful with sex or urination

Male individuals may suffer from rare symptoms of this sexual infection which are given below –

  • Inching in penis
  • Penis Irritation
  • Burning or pain during urination or sexual intercourse
  • Discomfort or pain during sexual activity
  • Unusual or painful discharge from the penis

This sexual infection also increases the risk of both contracting and transmitting HIV and may also cause pregnancy complications.  

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Viruses)– This sexual disease may increase the risk of contracting other viruses or bacteria that can damage the immune system and may spread through sexual contact or intercourse with an infected person. It also causes stage 3 HIV known as AIDS which is a very dangerous disease. If any individual has HIV, then the virus will present in their bodily fluids such as blood, vaginal and rectal fluids, semen, and breast milk and if these bodily fluids spread to any other person via sexual contact, sharing needles, and breastfeeding then that person also contract with HIV.

During the early stages, the common symptoms of HIV are as given below –

  • Pains and Aches
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Rashes
  • Chills

These starting symptoms occur after one month of HIV. Any person can carry HIV without developing persistent or serious symptoms for several years.  Other people who may develop generic symptoms including

  • Headaches
  • Problem in stomach
  • Fevers
  • Recurrent fatigue

There is no medicine for this sexual disease but some of the treatment options are available to manage it. The proper treatment can also lower the risk of transmitting HIV to your partner and also reduce the amount of HIV in your body to undesirable levels. You can lower the risk of spreading HIV by using a condom during sexual intercourse, not sharing needles, and many more.

Chlamydia – It is a common sexually transmitted disease or infection which may spread via oral, anal, and vaginal sex. This sexual disease may also spread during childbirth and may not cause any symptoms. Chlamydia may also spread when an individual with chlamydia shares their sex toys with their sexual partners. Generally, chlamydia does not cause any symptoms and may also result in infertility and many more complications. The bacteria which cause chlamydia may pass via semen and vaginal fluid and can spread to another person through sexual intercourse. Some people are suffering from chlamydia with no noticeable symptoms.

But several rare symptoms of chlamydia are as discussed below –

  • Feel pain in the abdomen
  • Painful intercourse
  • During urination or sex, uneasiness pain, or discomfort
  • It may be a yellow or green discharge from the vagina or penis.
  • Pus in the urine
  • Painful periods

Syphilis – It is also one of the sexually transmitted infections which may spread through sexual intercourse. This sexual infection may also pass or spread to a baby during childbirth or pregnancy and also via breastfeeding. Syphilis starts or begins as a sore which may be painless and typically appears on the rectum, mouth, or genitals and may spread from individual to individual by contacting directly with these sores. The chancre is a painless ulcer and is one of the early stages symptoms of Syphilis which may develop on your anus, genitals, and mouth. This sexual disease is painless but very infectious.

There are some of the symptoms of early-stage syphilis are given below –

  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Lowering weight
  • Rash
  • Hair loss
  • Fatigue

 Syphilis is simply treated with the use of antibiotics. But this sexual disease in a newborn may be incurable. Thus, all pregnant ladies are to be screened for syphilis. It is important to note that the early stage of syphilis is diagnosed and treated.

Gonorrhea – It is one of the common sexually transmitted diseases or infections, which is caused by bacteria and can infect the rectum, throat, urethra, eyes, or mouth. This sexual infection may commonly spread during anal or vaginal or oral sexual activity while babies may get infected at the time of childbirth.  Gonorrhea may infect only the eyes in babies which may get infected during childbirth.

There are no symptoms of gonorrhea but it may affect the genital tract so several symptoms of Gonorrhea in the genital tract are given below –

  • Painful urination
  • Pelvic or Abdomen pain
  • Pus-like discharge from the penis
  • Swelling the genitals
  • Increased vaginal discharge
