National Milk Day 2025

Introduction – National milk is celebrated every year on November 26 in India to honor the efforts of Dr Verghese Kurien who is also popularly called as the ‘’Father of White Revolution’’. In the past, Dr Kurien was the chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) which played an important role in the development of the dairy industry in our country. The main aim of National Milk Day is to provide information that concerns the inevitability and the significance of milk in human life.

History – Earlier, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Indian Dairy Association (IDA), and 22 state-level milk federations decided to observe National Milk Day in the year 2014 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien who is popularly known as ‘’Father of White Revolution’’ in India. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) embarked on a national development project, Operation Flood in the year 1970 to establish a milk grid across the country. White Revolution is one of the major programs known as Operation Flood that made India one of the largest milk producers and providers across the world. The main aim of Operation Flood under Dr Kurien is to increase the production of milk for domestic consumption and improve the economic status of rural areas in India.

Significance – Milk is the first food and extremely nutritious that contains several nutrients including vitamins, calcium, and phosphorus which is also the main source of nutrition for infants or babies before they can digest solid food after birth. Mik is beneficial in making the bones strong and lowering the risk of cognitive decline. It also helps in improving the immunity of the human body which may prevent several infectious diseases. Milk also contains a good source of many other essential nutrients including protein, vitamin D, and calcium. It is also good for strong bones, boosting immunity, and strong teeth that are beneficial for your health. Thus, National Milk Day provides an opportunity to spread awareness about the health benefits and importance of the consumption of milk across the country.
