World Prematurity Day 2025

World Prematurity Day is celebrated annually on November 17 to spread awareness about the challenges and mortalities of babies due to preterm births across the world. The main aim of this international day is to share the difficulties and challenges of preterm births. This global day provides an opportunity for doctors or other health professionals to share the difficulties of preterm births worldwide.

Prematurity is the wide category of preterm or early birth babies before 37 weeks of development or gestation and also the main cause of baby’s deaths across the world. The main cause of premature birth babies or newborn mortality is preterm delivery all over the world. There are several causes of premature baby fatalities with less than 1000g such as congenital deformity, infection, and respiratory failure. Most of the preterm birth babies are born naturally, and other several cases of premature kids, which are caused by some medical reasons such as infections or many other pregnancy issues that require early induction of labor birth.

As per a new report introduced by United Nations agencies and partners. There is about 1.34 crore kids were delivered prematurely in the year 2020 with approximately 10 lakh premature babies dying due to several preterm complications. Preterm birth is one of the main causes of infant death which is around more than one-fifth of all deaths of babies under the age of 5. The survival of preterm kids may bear long-term health repercussions and may enhance the risk of developmental delays and disability.
