World Anesthesia Day 2025

Introduction World Anesthesia Day is also called as Ether Day in several countries is celebrated every year on October 16 to mark the discovery of anesthesia 176 years ago which made it possible for patients to experience or suffer surgical procedures without any pain. Anesthesia is the use of medicines to lower or prevent pain throughout the surgical and many other procedures and these medicines are known as anesthetics. It may be given through inhalation, spray, injection, and many more. Anesthesia can be used in slight procedures such as surgical conditions, childbirth, filling a tooth, and many more. It is also used in minor and major surgeries in hospitals.

There are several types of anesthesia such as regional anesthesia, local anesthesia, and general anesthesia. Normally, anesthesia is safe but it may be risks, especially with general anesthesia including allergic reactions, breathing problems, heart rhythm, and many more. The main purpose of this global day is to raise awareness about the importance of anesthesia during surgical procedures across the world.

Types of Anesthesia – There are three types of anesthesia that can be used in the medical industry are discussed below –

  • Local Anesthesia – This type of anesthesia is used for minor surgeries in a specific part of the body. In this type of anesthesia, the duration of this anesthesia is also relatively less.
  • Regional Anesthesia – This type of anesthesia is used to numb a larger portion of the body such as the abdomen.
  • General Anesthesia – This type of anesthesia leaves the patient unconscious with relaxed muscles and is rendered by either inhalation or injection.
