Introduction – World Ozone Day is celebrated every year on September 16 across the world to spread awareness about the importance of the ozone layer in our daily life. The representatives came from different 24 countries met in Canada’s Montreal for discussing the emergency situation of depleting the ozone layer that was held in the year 1987. In this event, the representatives of these 24 countries signed and pledged to protect the ozone layer by lowering the use of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) because chlorofluorocarbons are responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer in the atmosphere. The main aim of this international day is to raise awareness about the importance and protection of the ozone layer.

Ozone layer is situated at the stratosphere layer of the earth which absorbs the ultra-violet radiations coming from the sun with contains a high concentration of Ozone (O3) in this layer. Ozone layer contains high concentration of Ozone that mostly present in the lower portion of the stratosphere from about 15 to 35 kilometres above the surface of the Earth. Henri Buisson and Charles Fabry are French physicists that discovered the ozone layer in the year 1913. The ozone layer absorbs about 97 to 99 percent of ultraviolet light that comes from the Sun else it would produce serious diseases including skin cancer in human beings, and also harm the crop plants.
If the ozone layer of the atmosphere is removed then harmful ultra-violet radiations that are coming from the sun will reach the earth and causes serious diseases such as skin cancer in human beings and also harm the crop plants
History – The United Nations General Assembly announced that World Ozone Day is celebrated annually on September 16 in the year 1994 which honors the date on which Montreal Protocol was signed in the year 1987. Thus, firstly, World Ozone Day is observed on September 16, 1995, across the world. The main purpose of this international day is to raise awareness about the importance and preservation of the ozone layer.
Significance – The main aim of this international day is to save or protect the ozone layer by taking several steps to control the consumption of those substances that causes the depletion of the ozone layer. The ozone layer is located at the stratosphere layer of the earth. The main advantage of the ozone layer is to absorb the ultraviolet radiations that are coming from the sun which is harmful to the skin of the body. It is important to note that the ozone layer absorbs around 97 to 99 percent of ultraviolet light that comes from the sun else ultraviolet light causes serious diseases such as skin cancer in human beings and also damages crop plants.
