Introduction – Women’s Equality Day is observed every year in the United States on August 26 to honors American women achieving the constitutional right to vote in their country. This international day honor the decision for giving voting rights to women in the United States in the year 1920 after a long fight or struggle. The main aim of Women’s Equality Day is to raise awareness of the problems that are faced by women in society in gender-based discrimination, equal opportunities, pay disparity, gender-based violence, and abortion rights.

History – To achieve equal rights, the first peaceful protests were conducted at the world’s first Women’s Rights Convention in the New York state in the year 1848. Bella Abzug, United States Congress Representative introduced the bill for celebrating August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in the year 1971 to mark the continuous efforts made by women for achieving equal rights or status in society. This day also marks the nationwide strike or demonstrated by women and celebrates the 50^th anniversary of the 19^th Amendment approval. Richard Nixon, President of the United States, declared to celebrate Women’s Equality Day on August 26 annually in the year 1973. This day was also observed to honor the approval of the 19^th Amendment to the Constitution in the year 1920 that granted women the right to vote in the United States.

Significance – Women’s Equality Day draws attention to the difficulties faced by women and marks the commemoration of the 19^th Amendment of the United States Constitution. This day also acknowledges the achievements made by women in many fields. The main purpose of this day is to raise awareness for the difficulties that are faced by women in society in equal opportunities, gender-based discrimination, pay disparity, gender-based violence, and abortion rights. It is also celebrated for appreciating and acknowledging women and to progress to achieve gender equality across the world. There are several organizations including women’s welfare societies, NGOs, and many more arrange programs and activities for facilitating the achievements of women.
