History – National Doctors Day is celebrated every year on July 1 in India to honor the birth and death anniversaries of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy who was a freedom fighter, popular doctor, and former Chief Minister of West Bengal. National Doctors Day was first celebrated on July 1, in the year 1991 to honor the invaluable contribution of doctors and many other health professionals who work selflessly to comfort, heal, treat, and save lives across the country.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on July 1 in the year 1882 and interestingly died on the same date on July 1 in the year 1962 at the age of 80 years old. He was a popular doctor, a freedom fighter, and a former Chief Minister of West Bengal. Dr. Bidhan Roy was a chief minister of West Bengal from 1950 until his death on July 1, in the year 1962. He also received Bharat Ratna Award, India’s highest civilian honor on February 4, 1961.
Significance – The Indian Government established National Doctors Day on July 1 in the year 1991 to honor the great contributions of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who played a significant role in creating several popular medical institutions such as Victoria Institution, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamla Nehru Memorial, Chittranjan Cancer Hospital, Vi Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Chittranjan Seva Sadan for women and children. Dr. Bidhan Roy was also popular as the first medical consultant in the subcontinent of India who rose over his contemporaries in several fields to the British Medical Journal.
