Introduction—National Dengue Day is celebrated annually on May 16 in India to spread awareness about dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, among common people in our country. The main goal of this International Day is to raise awareness about the increasing threat of this dangerous disease, dengue fever, which is mainly spread in the monsoon season. This International Day provides opportunities for people to share the harmful effects of dengue fever and several preventions to lower the spread of this dangerous disease in India.

Dengue – It is a mosquito-borne viral infection, which spreads to people by biting infected mosquitoes. Female mosquito Aedes was responsible for the spread of dengue with symptoms of headache, mild fever, joint or muscle pain, and many more. As per the World Health Organization, there is about half of the population worldwide has a risk of dengue and around 100 -400 million infections occur per year. But when the condition of dengue may become severe then it may cause dengue shock syndrome and hemorrhagic fever.
Causes of Dengue – Dengue is caused by one or more types of dengue viruses and is spread through mosquito bites. When a mosquito bites an infected individual with a dengue virus then the virus enters the mosquito. After that, when the infected mosquito bites another individual then the virus enters the bloodstream of the person that causes an infection. When you recover or free from the dangerous disease, dengue fever then you have long-term immunity to this type of virus that infected you but not to the other three types of dengue fever virus. It means that you may be infected again by the other three types of dengue fever virus in the future.
Symptoms of Dengue – There are several symptoms of dengue are given below –
- Headache
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Rash
- Bone, joint, or muscle pain
- Swollen glands
Most of the people recover from dengue within a week but in some cases, symptoms may worsen that can become life-threatening and are known as severe dengue, dengue shock syndrome, and dengue hemorrhagic fever. Severe dengue occurs when the blood vessels become leaky and damaged and the number of platelets in the blood drop. It can lead to organ failure, shock internal bleeding, and may even death.
Prevention – The main idea to lower the risk of dengue fever is that controlling the mosquito population that is beneficial in preventing mosquito bites to reduce the spread of the dengue virus. There are several other ideas to prevent the spread of dengue in your house or location are discussed below –
- You can clean the water of your cooler regularly to lower the population of mosquitoes and reduce the risk of dengue fever.
- You should wear protective clothing in mosquito-infected areas to lower the risk of dengue fever.
- You can decrease or control the population of mosquitoes via empty containers that hold standing water and cleaning your surroundings.
- You can also regularly clean your home to prevent the spread of dengue fever among family members.
- You can use the All-Out machine, Good Night machine, and many others during the night that prevent mosquito bites and lower the risk of dengue fever.
