Introduction – World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on March 23 across the world to mark or honor the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which is a particular agency which is formed by the United Nations. This global day recognizes the important role of the organization in progressing or supporting worldwide efforts in water, climate, and weather management across the world.

History – Earlier, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was founded on March 23, 1950, and became a specialized agency of the United Nations in the year 1951. Firstly, World Meteorological Day is celebrated in the year 1961. This organization concentrates on education, standardization, research, and meteorological issues or challenges across the world. World Meteorological Organization offers important climate guidance, tools, and information to simplify decision-making at the national level and also supports or recognizes the mobilization of climate finance for effective solutions.
Theme – The theme of the World Meteorological Day in the year 2025 is ‘Closing the Early Warning Gap Together’ which highlights the significance of early warning systems in lowering the effect of climate change and extreme weather events worldwide. Earlier, the theme for the World Meteorological Day in the year 2024 is ‘’At the Frontline of Climate Action’’. World Meteorological Organization also monitors the regional, national and global climate conditions and also highlights the crucial requirement for climate action to officials.
The theme for this international day in the year 2023 was ‘’The Future of Weather, Climate, and Water Across Generations’’ which mainly concentrates on rapid climate change in several years and resolves the issue of rapid climate change for future generations.
Significance – Meteorological is a branch of science, which helps in defining or determining the patterns and processes of the atmosphere and is also beneficial in forecasting the weather of any location. The main purpose of this international day is to raise awareness about the importance of forecasting weather changes worldwide. This international day also honors the achievements of the World Meteorological Organization in predicting weather and climate change mitigation efforts and drawing attention to continued cooperation and support to resolve the issue of climate change across the world.
