Socialism or Equality is the basic concept of Islam. Muslim rich people cannot ignore poor or needy people in Islam. Thus, Fitrah is obligatory for Muslims to help needy persons. For this, every Muslim has to pay Zakat, Fitrah, Sadqa, and Khairat. During the holy month of Ramzan, one has to pay Fitrah to poor people who may be relatives, orphans, beggars, or hopeless. Until Fitrah is given to needy persons, Roza (Fast) will not be accepted by God (Allah).

The calculation of Fitrah has been described differently by different sects of Islam. Simply, it has been recommended that what we eat regularly should be the basis of calculation. The main items that have been recommended to pay Fitrah are Wheat, Barley, Raisin (dried grapes or Kishmish), and Dates (Khajoor) any one of them. Each person to pay Fitrah for any one item is as given below –
- Wheat – 2kg +
- Raisin – 3.5 kg
- Barley – 3.5 kg
- Dates (Khajoor) – 3.5 kg
Generally, in India, the cost of 2kg Wheat is paid which is about Rs 100 per head. It is mainly paid by the head of the family for all dependent family members regardless of age, or may be even newly born.
