Umrah – An Islamic Pilgrimage to Holy Mecca

Umrah is an Arabic word that means to visit a populated place and is a ritual similar as Hajj but in a short form, Umrah is performed by three important rituals such as Tawaf, Sai, and Twafun Nisa. Before performing Umrah, Muslim pilgrims must wear Ehram, a dress, after cleansing themselves.  Thus, Muslim pilgrims wear Ehram at a specific place called as Miqat, a principal boundary point in Meccabefore reaching Mecca. For men, the Ehram consists of two clothes, one for the upper portion and the other for the lower parts. Muslim male pilgrims are not allowed to wear readymade clothes including shirts, pants, and even underwear. Men are not allowed to cover their heads and women are required to cover their heads but open faces. During Umrah, male individuals must cut, trim, or shave their hair in Taqseer after performing Sai and Tawaf.

Three important rituals of Umrah are Tawaf, Sai, and Twafun Nisa where Tawaf means circling around the holy Kaaba seven times. After performing Tawaf, offering namaz of two rakat was performed behind Maqam e Ibrahim. Sai is performed by walking between Hillocks of Safa and Marwa seven times and later Taqseer is performed by cutting, trimming or shaving hairs after performing Sai. After performing Taqseer, Tawafun Nisa was performed by circling around (tawaf) again the holy Kaaba seven times and later performing prayer (namaz) behind Maqam e Ibrahim. When Tawafun Nisa was completed then Umrah was done. Umrah is completed or done in a few hours and less expensive as compared with Hajj which takes several days and more expensive.

Generally, Umrah is performed by those people who do not feel comfortable or not unable to do Hajj. After Umrah, Muslim pilgrims must visit several pilgrim sites such as  Jannat ul-Mualla, Mount Arafat, Cave of Hira, Jabal ar-Rahmah. Masjid e Aisha, Jamrat & Mina, Masjid e Jinn, and many more

Before going to Mecca for Umrah, Muslim pilgrims visit several pilgrim sites of Medina for Ziarat. Firstly, Muslim pilgrims must visit and offer namaz at Masjid al-Nabawi in the city of Medina. There are several important pilgrim places in Medina, which are related to Prophet Muhammad where Muslim pilgrims must visit during Umrah such as Masjid al-Nabawi, Musjid Quba, Mount Uhud, Masjid al-Qiblatayn, Khandaq, Masjid e-Ali and many more. Jannat al-Baqi is situated close to Masjid al-Nabawi and is a vast burial place of many important persons who are related to Prophet Muhammad.
