World Jellyfish Day 2024

Introduction – World Jellyfish Day is celebrated every year on November 3 across the world to raise awareness about the importance of jellyfish in the marine ecosystem, The main purpose of this international day is to promote knowledge about the different species of jellyfish and their important role in the marine ecosystem.

Mostly, jellyfish are free-swimming marine animals with trailing tentacles and umbrella-shaped bells. This marine animal is found from surface waters to the deep sea across the world. Jellyfish eat plankton that are small organisms which float in the water. Several marine animals including seabirds, fish, and turtles eat jellyfish. Jellyfish may help in maintaining the ocean healthy by removing waste products from the water. They are also beneficial in controlling or maintaining the population of marine animals in the sea and ocean.

History – A group of marine biologists founded World Jellyfish Day in the year 2014 to spread awareness about the importance of jellyfish in the marine ecosystem. World Jellyfish is celebrated on November 3 because it is the birthdate date of a German biologist, Dr. Ernst Haeckel who made a great contribution to the study or observation of Jellyfish. The main aim of this international day is to encourage individuals to conserve or protect jellyfish that helps to maintain the marine ecosystem.

Significance – This international provides an opportunity to educate individuals about the conservation of jellyfish that help in maintaining and cleaning the ocean by removing waste products from the water. Overfishing, water pollution, and climate change are the major threats to jellyfish in the sea and ocean. The main aim of this international day is to encourage individuals to work on the protection of jellyfish and their habitats. Jellyfish are found in different sizes, colors, and shapes.
