Introduction – World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on September 10 to highlight important ways to prevent suicides among common people across the world. The main aim of this global day is to share several ways to avoid or reduce stress or depression or tension that decreases the cases of suicide worldwide..

According to World Health Organization, more than 7 lakh individuals suicide thus it is the leading cause of death mainly the age between 15 and 29 years old across the world. This International Day provides an opportunity to concentrate on important ways and measures to prevent or reduce the number of suicides by reducing depression and improving mental health. This can be done through family love and support. Family members including parents and friends should talk to that individual who is suffering from depression that reduces the risk of suicide.
History – The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IAS) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) first established or introduced World Suicide Prevention Day in the year 2003. This global day provides an important platform to concentrate worldwide attention on the prevention of suicides. The main aim of this International Day is to reduce or prevent suicides through family love and support that is beneficial in improving mental health.
Theme – The theme of World Suicide Prevention Day in the year 2024 is ‘’Changing the Narrative on Suicide’’ with the call to action ‘’Start the Conversation’’ which talks about reducing depression or stigma and encourages open conversations to prevent or reduce the number of suicides across the world.
Significance – Severe depression is the main cause of suicides among young individuals worldwide. Relationship issues, break-ups, divorce, unemployment, financial crisis, failure in board or several competitive exams, and many more causes of depression, which may result in suicides. If any individual is suffering from severe depression, then their family members and friends should talk to that person and help in lowering depression by resolving their issues or difficulties that reduce the chances of suicide. If you are suffering from severe depression then you must talk or discuss your problem with your parents, best friends and close family members which is beneficial in lowering depression and relaxing feelings. The main goal of this international day is to avoid committing suicide by fighting against challenges or difficulties with full strength.
