Introduction – World Lion Day is celebrated annually on August 10 across the world to spread awareness about the significance and conservation of lions to maintain the ecosystem. The main aim of this international day is to plant trees or increase the area of forests which is beneficial in improving the population of lions worldwide. Presently, the population of lions is rapidly decreasing due to illegal trade, poaching, and cutting forests.

Generally, lions are popularly called as the king of the jungle still unfortunately the population of lions is rapidly reduced due to deforestation, habitat loss, climate change, poaching, illegal trade, and many more. Thus, this international day provides an opportunity to spread awareness about the conservation and protection of lions across the world. Mostly lions eat grass-eating animals including deer, buffalo, and many more which maintains the population of grass-eating animals which is also beneficial in keeping the forests worldwide.

History – The world’s largest sanctuary devoted to lions, Big Cat Rescue introduced World Lion Day in the year 2013 which was co-founded by Dereck and Beverly Joubert. The main purpose of this international day is to draw attention to increase the population of lions by reducing poaching, planting trees, and many more.

Significance – A lion play a significant role in maintaining ecosystem balance by controlling or maintaining the population of eating grass animals.  The preservation or conservation of lions helps to protect and save or increase green forests areas and is beneficial for biodiversity management. Earlier, the Indian Government made and implemented several schemes and projects to protect and increase the population of lions in our country.  If the population of lions is rapidly decreased then the population of grass-eating animals increases and may affect the balance of the ecosystem. Thus, this global provides an opportunity to educate common people about the importance and conservation of lions to maintain ecosystems across the world.
