RIP Munawwar Rana Sir

It’s very heartbreaking, shocking, and sad news that Indian popular Urdu Poet, Munawwar Rana died at the age of 71 due to cardiac arrest on January 14, 2024 at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, Munawwar Rana has suffered from lung and throat infections since 2017. Munawwar Rana was also undergoing kidney treatment regularly and he had to undergo dialysis.

Munawwar Rana was a popular Indian poet, which was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem Shahdaba in the year 2014. He was born on November 26, 1952, in Rae Bareli in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and spent most time of his life in Kolkata, West Bengal. Munawwar Rana wrote many ghazals with a different type of writing. Most of his poems (Shers) are based on the mother as the main point of his love. Tapan Kumar Pradhan translated the Ghazals of Munawwar Rana into English.

Till now, Munawwar Rana was living with his family in Lucknow. He was also awarded Maati Ratan Samman by Shaheed Shodha Sansthan for his popular Urdu poem or literature. He will always be remembered as a popular Indian poet across the world
