Indian Political Leaders who died in the year 2023

Several Indian political leaders who died in the year 2023 are Prakash Singh Badal, Oommen Chandy, Sharad Yadav, and many more. We discuss those political leaders who died in the year 2023 are given below –

  1. Sharad Yadav – Former union minister and RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) leader, Sharad Yadav died due to kidney-related issues at the age of 75 on January 12, 2023. He was suffering from kidney-related issues for a long period and was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Gurugram. Sharad Yadav became MP (Member of Parliament) 7 times and was elected to Rajya Sabha four times from Janata Dal United (JDU) party. He was also the first national president of Janata Dal (United) between 2003 and 2016
  2. Prakash Singh Badal – Former Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader, Prakash Singh Badal died at the age of 95 at Fortis hospital on April 25, 2023, in Mohali, Punjab. He was the patron and the president of Shiromani Akali Dal between 1995 and 2008. Prakash Singh Badal was also the Chief Minister of Punjab between 1970 and 1971, between 1977 and 1980, between 1997 and 2002, and finally between 2007 and 2017. He was also the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare in 1977 in the ministry of Morarji Desai.
  3. Balu Dhanokar – Indian politician and Congress leader, Balu Dhanokar also called as Balubhau Dhanokar or Suresh Narayan Dhanokar died at the age of 47 due to kidney stone complications on May 30, 2023. He was the leader of the Indian National Congress and a member of parliament from Chandrapur constituency. After resigning the MLA (member of legislative assembly) from Shiv Sena, he joined the Indian National Congress political party.
  4. Oommen Chandy – Former Kerala Chief Minister and Congress leader, Oommen Chandy died at the age of 79 due to complications from throat cancer on July 18, 2023, in Bengaluru. Oommen Chandy was the Chief Minister of Kerala between 2004 and 2006 and between 2011 and 2016. He also served as the leader of the opposition between 2006 and 2011 in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Oommen Chandy also received an award for public service in the year 2013 from the United Nations. He was also a member of the legislative Assembly in Kerala from the Puthuppally constituency for 5 decades from 1970 until his death in the year 2023.
  5. D.B. Chandregowda – Indian politician and former speaker D.B. Chandregowda died at the age of 87 due to age-related ailments on November 7, 2023, at his home in Daradahalli. Earlier, he was the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and also worked as the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs. He was also the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Chandragowda represented many political parties including Janata Dal, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Indian National Congress.
  6. N. Sankaraiah – Communist Party leader, N. Sankaraiah died at the age of 102 in Apollo Hospital on November 15, 2023. He was suffering from fever and breathing problems. N. Sankaraiah was the central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and also the state secretary of CPI(M) in Tamil Nadu between 1995 and 2002. 
  7. Ranjit Singh Talwandi – Secretary General of Shiromani Akali Dal, Ranjit Singh Talwandi died due to a prolonged illness at the age of 67 on December 5, 2023, at PGI in Chandigarh. Ranjit Singh Talwandi was the son of the former president of Shiromani Akali Dal, and Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Jagdev Singh Talwandi, and also elected as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly between 2002 and 2007 from Rajkot constituency.
  8. Vijayakanth – DMDK founder and popular actor, Vijayakanth died due to pneumonia at the age of 71 on December 28, 2023. He also received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for his great role in the movie Senthoora Poove for best actor in the year 1988. Vijayakanth was the founder and president of DMDK (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam) political party and was also the leader of the opposition between 2011 and 2016 in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He was also the MLA twice (member of legislative assembly) and represented Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituency respectively between 2006 and 2016.
