Conjunctivitis – It is medically or popularly called as eye flu that affects people of all ages and is characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva. Now understand what is conjunctiva, a conjunctiva is a membrane or thin or transparent layer, which covers the inner surface of the eyelids and the white portion of the eyes. If small blood vessels become irritated and swollen in the conjunctiva then they are more visible.

Several factors that cause eye flu including allergies or exposure to certain environmental irritants, bacterial or viral infections, and many more. But eye flu or conjunctivitis is mainly caused by a viral infection and is spread easily from person to person. Eye flu may be irritating which rarely affects your vision so you should take precautions including avoiding rubbing your eyes, not touching contaminated items like towels, washing your hands regularly, and many more to lower the risk of eye flu or conjunctivitis.

Different Types of Conjunctivitis – There are several causes of the pinky eye or eye flu or conjunctivitis in human beings are given below –

1. Bacterial Conjunctivitis – This type of conjunctivitis is caused by bacterial infections that may affect one or both eyes Bacterial conjunctivitis may occur when these bacteria enter the eyes by touching the eyes with dirty hands, sharing contaminated items like towels with an infected person, and many more. Bacterial conjunctivitis can cause more serious problems or symptoms as compared with viral conjunctivitis.
2. Viral Conjunctivitis – It is one of the most common causes of eye flu or conjunctivitis which is mainly caused by viruses. Viral conjunctivitis is highly transmissible and may spread easily by touching contaminated surfaces with the virus and then touching the eyes. This type of conjunctivitis is also spread by contact with respiratory droplets from an infected individual. Viral conjunctivitis is highly transmissible and may affect both eyes simultaneously that may causing irritation, light sensitivity, watery discharge, and redness.
3. Chemical Conjunctivitis – This type of conjunctivitis may occur when the conjunctiva comes into contact with chemicals or irritants such as harsh cleaning products, smoke, chlorine in swimming pools, and fumes. Chemical conjunctivitis is not infectious but it may cause discomfort, redness, and irritation in the eyes.
4. Allergies Conjunctivitis– It is a non-infectious type of eye flu or conjunctivitis that is caused by an allergic reaction to allergens including dust, certain eye drops, pollen, car fumes, and many more. This type of eye flu is not transmissible and may affect both eyes. This type of conjunctivitis may cause tearing, swelling of the eyelids, itching, and redness.
