World COPD Day 2022

Introduction – World COPD Day is celebrated every year on November 16 across the world to spread awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. The main aim of this international day is to inform people about the severity and prevention of COPD disease across the world.

COPD – It stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is one of the severe disorders which prevents airflow from the lungs that makes it difficult for individuals to carry out their daily routines. It is also a chronic inflammatory lung disease which causes obstructed airflow from the lungs.  If any person is suffering from COPD, then it may enhance the risk of getting diagnosed with lung cancer, heart disease, and many more. A person can reduce the risk of COPD and several other associated diseases through appropriate treatment and proper management.

Chronic bronchitis and Emphysema are the most common conditions which contribute to COPD. Generally, these two conditions occur together that may vary in severity among people with COPD.

Symptoms of COPD – There are many symptoms of COPD are given below –

  1. Chest toughness
  2. Wheezing
  3. Difficulty in breathing especially during physical activities
  4. Unintended weight loss
  5. A chronic cough can produce mucus which may be white, greenish, or yellow.
  6. Swelling in feet, ankles, or feet
  7. Coughing

Causes of COPD – The main cause of COPD is tobacco smoking and smoking cigarette is the main leading cause of COPD disease. Most individuals are suffering from this disease at an age of 40 or above with a history of smoking. Many genetic factors and other irritants are also causes of COPD disease.

Risk factors of COPD – There are some of the risk factors of COPD are given below –

  1. Asthma
  2. Smoking tobacco
  3. Genetic or family history
  4. Work in polluted areas which are composed of many chemicals and dust
  5. Household air pollution

Prevention – If you want to prevent COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases) by quitting or avoiding smoking tobacco. Avoidance of smoking tobacco can reduce the risk of lung cancer and heart disease.

Theme – The theme of World COPD Day in the year 2022 is ‘’Your Lungs for Life’’ which will emphasize the cause of COPD between childhood and adulthood. It may be done to promote life long health and safeguard vulnerable populations.
