Introduction – World Diabetes Day is observed every year on November 14 across the country to celebrate the birth anniversary of Sir Frederick Banting that invented the insulin hormone along with Charles Herbert Best in the year 1922. The main aim of this international day is to highlight the complications of chronic disease worldwide. Diabetes is also the main cause of several diseases such as blindness, kidney failure, and heart attack: or stroke. A healthy diet, physical exercise or activity, and avoiding tobacco lower the risk of type-2 diabetes.

History –Both World Health Organization (WHO) and International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) introduced World Diabetes Day in the year 1991. This international day was officially confirmed by the United Nations in the year 2007 by accepting the resolution. The main goal of this international day is to raise awareness about metabolic disorders and several tips to maintain the sugar levels in the blood that lowers the risk of several heart diseases. November 14 was chosen to celebrate World Diabetes Day due to the birth anniversary of Frederick Banting along with Charles Best that invented insulin.
Significance – Diabetes is one of the diseases across the world that people face difficulties in daily life. Thus, the main aim of this international day is to raise awareness about diabetes and also recognize those people who fight this disease. The main reason to observe World Diabetes Day is to promote the learning associated with diabetes and its preventions or treatments. This global day also focuses on drawing attention to maintain or reduce sugar levels in the blood to prevent diabetes. Diabetes may be harmful to your heart health that may cause several heart diseases.

Diabetes is a long-lasting disease which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin so it may cause an increased concentration of glucose level in the blood. There are several types of diabetes are discussed below –
- Type 1 diabetes – This type of diabetes occurs in those people due to a lack of insulin production in the body.
- Type 2 diabetes – This type of diabetes is caused by the ineffective use of the body’s insulin. Type 2 diabetes is also caused by physical inactivity, obesity, increase in age, drinking, and bad diet.
- Gestational diabetes – This type of diabetes also occurs during the time of pregnancy. But most cases of gestational diabetes are prevented after a baby is born.
