International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2022

Introduction – International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is celebrated every year on June 26 across the world to speak against the crime of torture and to support or honor victims who are suffering from torture. This international provides an opportunity to help victims speak out against violence and share the stories of their suffering of torture in safe spaces all around the world.

History – The United Nations adopted the resolution on December 12, 1997, and announced that International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is observed every year on June 26 across the world. The main aim of this international day is the abolition of torture across the world. Firstly, International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is celebrated on June 26, 1998. On this day, the United Nations requested to all governments, members, and stakeholders of international society to take action against the crime of torture across the world.

Significance – This international day supports those people who are suffering from physical and mental torture. The United Nations claimed that the result of torture may be converted into a series of violence with a severe impact on the generations to come in the future. This global day is observed to appeal to all the countries, civil societies, and people for extending their support to victims of torture and also those who are being tortured across the world. This international day provides an opportunity for people to raise their voices against killings or murders across the world. Many organizations such as International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims and Amnesty International are organized several events to sensitive individuals against torture and build empathy among common people towards torture victims by sharing poster distribution, seminars, photo exhibitions, television advertisements, sharing stories of victims on social media websites.
