Significance – In the past, Germany was divided into East and West Germany after the end of World War II. British, French, and the Americans occupied West Germany whereas East Germany became the Soviet-occupied Germany Democratic Republic. In the year 1949, East Germany gained status as an independent country and the city of Berlin became a part of Soviet-controlled Germany. After division, a wall was made for preventing the migration of people between East Berlin and West Berlin. Thousands of people impatiently climbed and hit the Berlin wall with chisels and hammers.
