United Nations Day 2021

Introduction – United Nations Day is observed on October 24 every year to mark the anniversary of the UN Charter entered into force in the year 1945. This day celebrates the establishment of the United Nations on October 24, 1945.

History – The United Nations General Assembly declared that United Nations Day is observed annually on October 24 to celebrate the anniversary of the official creation of the United Nations on October 24, 1945. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution and announced that United Nations Day is celebrated as an international day that is recommended to observe as a public holiday by United Nations member states.

Significance – The United Nations is the world’s largest international organization that aims to maintain peace and security all around the world. It also helps for friendly relationships among countries to avoid future war by achieving worldwide cooperation. The headquarter of the United Nations in New York City and other offices are situated at Nairobi, The Hague, Geneva, and Vienna. The establishment of the United Nations after World War II with the aim to prevent future wars between several countries. There are 50 governments of different countries who met in San Francisco for a conference and started drafting the UN Charter that was adopted on June 25, 1945, and came into effect on October 24, 1945. The main purpose of the United Nations is to maintain worldwide peace and security, deliver humanitarian aid, uphold international law, promote sustainable development, and protect human rights. During the establishment, the United Nations had 51 member states with the addition of South Sudan in the year 2011. At present, the United Nations has 193 members that represent all the world’s sovereign states.

In past, the main goal of the United Nations is to maintain international peace during the cold war between the Soviet Union, and the United States with their respective allies. The United Nations has 6 principal organs are Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the UN Secretariat, the International Court of Justice, the Trusteeship Council, and the General Assembly. It has also several other agencies are World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Bank Group, and World Food Program. At present Antonio Guterres, Diplomat, and Portuguese politician, is a Security-General of the United Nations.
