Why Glacier Ice Appears Blue

A glacier is a persistent body of dense ice and forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation for several years or may be centuries. The term ‘’glacier’’ comes from the French word ‘’glace’’ that means ice. The glacier is also known as the ‘’river of ice’’. Most of the glaciers are made up of snow that is fallen in several years and packed together into solidifying masses of ice.

There is about 99 percent of glacial ice is contained within vast ice sheets is also called continental glaciers in the polar regions on the earth. However, glaciers are also present in mountain ranges on every continent. The glacier covers the land surface of the earth is about 10 percent. Patagonia and Greenland also have huge expanses of continental glaciers.

The glacier is the largest reservoir of fresh water on earth that is formed in oceans for living things. Some of the glaciers store water as ice in the winter season and release it in the form of water during the summer season. An increase in temperature causes the glacier to melt and creating a water source for human beings, animals, and plants. Most of the glaciers are found in polar regions such as Canadian Arctic, Antarctica, and Greenland. Some glaciers are found in mountain ranges in every continent such as Papua, New Guinea, and New Zealand.

Why glaciers ice appear blue – A large piece of compressed ice or a glacier that appears blue due to a large quantity of water appears blue. The main reason for the blue color is that water molecules absorb other colors more efficiently than blue. The other reason for the blue color of glaciers due to the lack of air bubbles. Air bubbles give a white color to ice that is squeezed out through increasing pressure density of the created ice.

Beautiful photos! If you want to see some nice glacier ice I’d recommend going to Iceland. I’ve been there twice – stunning both times.
